Granite Recreation Association Safety Rules and Regulations

FacilitySwimming PoolThunder and Lightning Timeout PolicyDivingLifeguard RegulationsTennisGuest PolicyPrivate PartiesParkingConsequences

These rules are a combination of the contractual requirements of our Management Service, the guidelines set by our Insurance Provider and the Granite Board of Directors.

Facility Safety Rules

Granite Recreation Association facilities are for use by current members and their guests only. Guests must be with a current member. Everyone must sign in at the guard’s desk at the gate. The Association is not responsible for the personal property of members, dependents, or guests, which is left, lost, damaged or stolen on Association property. Any Association property willfully damaged by any member or guest will be repaired or replaced at their expense.

All accidents must be reported to a lifeguard immediately.

Glass is not permitted.

Cigarette smoking is allowed only in designated areas and cigarette butts should be placed in appropriate containers. Trash receptacles and recycling containers are available for your use around the facility. Please use them!

Unsupervised children must be at least 12 years old, able to swim a length of the pool, and be sufficiently well-behaved not to disrupt the staff or bother other members. Children 11 and under must be supervised by someone 16 years old or over while on the property. Disruptive children will be sent home.

No members, guests or employees are allowed down by the quarry. First time offenders will receive 2 weeks suspension with parental notification. Second offenses will result in the offender being suspended for the summer. Employees who engage in any quarry related activities are subject to immediate dismissal.

Abusive or profane language, threats, or breach of peace will not be tolerated anywhere on association property.

Pets are not permitted inside the fenced pool area or on the tennis courts.

Please keep all personal listening devices at low volume.

Members will not be allowed access to the pool or playground areas before the scheduled opening time. All members must vacate the pool and playground areas no later than the posted closing time.

Swimming Pool Safety Rules

The swimming pool will be used only during scheduled hours when lifeguards are on duty. The lifeguards have the authority to close the pool at any time, in consideration of the health and safety of the members. (Cold weather, rain, thunder or electrical storms, an equipment malfunction, etc.). Everyone must leave the pool area in the event of an emergency. Gathering under the pool house overhang is not considered safe and therefore not allowed during a thunder or lightening evacuation.

Dunking, pushing, running, falling backwards into the pool and rough play are prohibited.

Bikes, skateboards, skates or rollerblades of any kind are not allowed.

Gum is not allowed.

No food or drinks are permitted at the pool edge.

An "Adult Swim" will be called by the lifeguards for 15 minutes at a quarter to the hour. Only adults, 18 years of age and older, may use the pool during this time. A child 2 years and under may accompany an adult if under the direct supervision of that adult. Adult swim may be called prior to closing to help facilitate members to vacate the pool area in a timely manner.

Approved life jackets, water wings and ring vests may be worn in the pools by children when accompanied in the pool and supervised by an adult. Small children and children wearing floatation devices may not be left unattended in the pools.

The baby pool is for the use of children age 5 and under only, and with the direct supervision of a responsible person, age 16 or older. Older children are not permitted in this pool.

Children still in diapers or potty training must wear approved swim diapers.

Hanging on the diving board, lane lines, the fill pipe or the lifeguard stands is not allowed.

Snorkels and facemasks are not allowed. Swim fins may be used in the lap lane only.

All persons, regardless of age, must wear proper swimming attire while in the swimming pool. Cut-off (un-hemmed) or hemmed shorts, Capri pants, jeans, cargo pants, belts, baseball caps, tank tops and shirts not worn as sun protection are all conidered street clothing and are not appropriate swimming attire.

Thunder and Lightning Timeout Policy

When thunder is heard, or lightning seen, the pool and all surrounding areas must be completely evacuated for a period of 30 minutes.

The open sided areas under the pool house overhang, under the Bradford Pear tree and umbrellas are not considered safe areas to wait until the time-out is over.

Conductors of lightning include the following areas of our facility:

  • Buried metal water and power lines running under the pool and surrounding decking
  • Metal light poles around the pool and parking lots
  • Dominion power poles and transformers
  • Metal fences that are contiguous to the building
  • Electrical phone and fiber optic lines, both aerial and buried
  • Trees and their extensive root systems
  • Wet ground and paved (concrete, asphalt) areas adjacent to buildings

Members are advised to take their belongings when they leave the pool enclosure as we cannot allow re-entry until the time out ends.  It is your choice whether to wait in your car or leave the property.

Children who have been dropped off and have no means to leave must have a way to contact their family as our lifeguards are not responsible for supervising unattended children.

The lifeguards will post the time members may return to the pool on a dry erase board which will be visible from the main gate.  This time is updated and extended after each clap of thunder is heard or lightning sited.  Members can monitor this board.

The movement of thunder storms in the area is unpredictable, therefore it is  necessary to evacuate the pool area when thunder is heard or lightning seen even when the sky is blue and the sun is shinning.  The policy does not allow for speculation of weather conditions and is the standard procedure set forth by the American Red Cross and the National Lightning Safety Institute.

All local public and private pools follow this same procedure.

We realize evacuation is an inconvenience, but we need the cooperation of the membership to follow this very important safety rule.

Please address any comments or questions you have to any Board member, or by sending us an email at membership@planetgranite.org.

Thank you,
Granite Board of Directors                                                                 Revised 2010

Parents who wish to be in the water while their child uses the diving board must stay next to the ladder on the side of the pool while the child is on the board. They can swim to meet their child after the child has entered the water.

Playing in the diving well when the diving board is in use is not permitted.

The diving board has a weight limit of 250 pounds. Divers in excess of this weight may be held accountable for resulting damages to the board.

Consequences

Granite is a family facility which strives to create a safe and pleasant environment for member families and their children. In order to maintain such an environment, lifeguards may remove persons from the facility if they deem it necessary.

The first occurrence will result in the offender being denied access to Granite Association property for the remainder of that day. The second occurrence will result in suspension from the facility for 1 week. Upon a third offense, the party will be denied access for 1 month. The final cause of action for repeated offenses is for the balance of the summer.
